Trailside

Just the other day, I was showing someone a picture of me and two giant Newfoundland dogs that I met here. This visit has stuck with me. We arrived the night before we were scheduled to shoot and stayed onsite, which is ideal because we were able to grab our cameras and meet the community while they barbecued and sat around their campfires roasting marshmallows.

I still remember how warm the water was (if you think I went to the lake and didn’t go swimming, you don’t know me at all) and the kid who had to show us how quickly he could catch a fish off his dock (three minutes or so).

But one of my favourite parts of this entire project was Janet and Rosie—you can see them in the video below. Janet would take her kayak out with her dog Rosie in a life vest. Janet throws a stick and Rosie leaps off of the kayak to swim out an retrieve it. Janet lifts Rosie back in to the kayak and the whole thing begins again. It was so charming.

I wasn’t mad about the mosquitos, but hey. That’s summer in the forest for ya. We’ll be back.
